Prior to drafting the various elements of their essay, we typically encourage students to generate a few ideas and consider strategic order before committing these thoughts to the page or screen. And we facilitate this process in any number of ways. Lots of times, our writers are asked to draft essays individually and on-demand, meaning a time limit is in place. So we share idea-generating strategies in the form of steps, pneumonic associations, or other memory triggers. These give writers a framework to access ideas quickly and efficiently within that limited time frame. But most of the time, we speak of brainstorming in the context of generating ideas for essays *exclusively*. It's important, however, that we translate just. how. valuable. this skill is beyond that. In other words, we need to peel back the classroom curtain to reveal the bigger picture of how brainstorming can lend itself to real-world application. In this blog post, I’m sharing 6 different strategies to get students brainstorming in real-world ways! Read Across America, but be *worldly* in your reads! In honor of this month’s nationwide celebration of literacy, I’m putting my favorite read of all time in the spotlight: The Alchemist, by Paul Coelho I’ll admit, I’m the ultimate nerd, so a lot of books have captured my heart over the years, but this one has taught me *all* the things...brings me to my knees every time! 📚 Live each day with a bias toward action. No one is knocking on your door, especially not Opportunity. If you want Her, you’ve got to go after Her yourself. 📚 Everything that matters exists right now. The past can prove a worthy guide; but you cannot let it define you. The future is inevitable, though not visible until it has arrived. Fear neither, respect both, but graciously set each aside in favor of the almighty Right Now. 📚 Don’t settle for anyone else’s life nor for their definition of what your life should be. It’s *your* life. Live it *your* way. And by all means, do so unapologetically. 📚 Call your shot, and then Jump. The Universe has your back if (and when!) it feels the force of your gravity. 📚 Our Truth is with us all the while, but sometimes we need to hit the pavement (physically, mentally, spiritually or otherwise!) to encourage it into being. Experience breeds an open mind and a genuine heart. 📚 Create without fear. Will you fail? Sure. Of course you will. But to seek your dreams is to live out the gift you’ve been given. (And according to my book notes, to chase your dreams is to walk with God!) What’s your favorite book of A L L time? Why? I want to hear about it! * * * * @paulcoelho #thealchemist #readacrossamerica #readacrossamerica2019 #celebrateliteracy #teachersofinsta #igteachers #teachersfollowteachers #iteachhighschool #teachertalk #teacherpreneur #teacherpreneurtribe #edpowerED
Monday morning Truth 💣: You can take any path they want... 🛤 It doesn’t have to be the one everyone else is on, or the one less traveled by. 👣 It doesn’t have to be the one you originally chose or the one someone else mapped out for you… 📍 And contrary to popular belief, it’s ok to ask for directions and re-route. Because there isn’t *one* way to achieve a dream 💫💫💫 Sometimes in chasing experiences, we stumble upon accomplishments we never dreamed of before 🏔 * * * * #teachersofinsta #igteachers #teachersfollowteachers #teachersbelike #teachertalk #teacherpreneur #teacherpreneurtribe #21stcenturyteaching #edpowerED

I loved getting geeky with all my teacher friends out there yesterday as we talked about the 7 Mistakes You Might be Making When Teaching Argument in the High School Classroom. With participants from all around the globe, we got our digital PD on, and it was awesome! Shout-out to @samiannbuffalo for this rather rad, in-the-moment share!! Ready to get your nerd on?
